TCU offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley received the Broyles Award on Tuesday, given annually to the nation’s best assistant coach.
“100% a Testament to TCU, the Players, Coach Dykes & our Staff,” Riley said on Twitter. “Happy to be a small part of it”
Riley is the program’s first-ever recipient of the Broyles Award. In addition to directing one of the nation’s top offensive attacks and helping lead the Horned Frogs to their first College Football Playoff appearance, Riley coached quarterback Max Duggan into being a Heisman Trophy finalist.
Under Riley’s tutelage, Duggan has also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and is a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.
In his first season on campus Riley managed to elevate TCU to new heights offensively.
The No. 3 Frogs have the 16th-best scoring offense in the country and lead the nation with 19 plays of 50-plus yards. TCU is tied for the FBS lead with 13 offensive touchdowns of at least 50 yards. The Frogs are one of just two teams in the country averaging at least 270 passing and 200 rushing yards per game, and have at least 30 passing and 30 rushing touchdowns.
Duggan is tied for second among Power 5 quarterbacks with 16 touchdown passes of at least 20 yards and has accounted for three or more touchdowns in eight of his 12 starts this season.
Duggan leads the Big 12 in passing efficiency, touchdown passes, passing yards, yards per attempt and yards per completion, while throwing just four interceptions.
For Riley, it’s right back to business. He will head out for a few days of recruiting before joining Duggan on Saturday in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony .
