Wednesday was National Signing Day, and at TCU, much like the majority of major college football, there were no press conferences, no announcements and no signees.

TCU signed a class of prep players that matched their season, with many ranking it in the top 15 nationally, back on Dec.  15. In fact, you can go back and take a look at that Recruiting Breakdown we featured on on the early signing day.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football‘s Greg Powers ranked TCU No. 2 overall amongst the colleges in Texas.

Powers took into account the transfer portal, as one must do and simply cannot ignore when looking at recruiting in today’s world of college football.

LSU coach Brian Kelly once equated the transfer portal, if done right, to “topping off the gas tank.”  You must fill your tank, or build your football program, with a solid foundation — i.e., players you take out of high school and develop from the ground up.

For TCU coach Sonny Dykes, he was really at the forefront of the portal age during his time at SMU.

Dykes brilliantly branded the Mustangs as “Dallas’ school” and with that built solid relationships with Dallas-area players, even if they were headed off to traditional blue-blood programs nationwide. Then, when those elite players were ready to return home, Dykes and Co. were waiting with open arms.

Sounds like a simple formula, and on the surface it was. However, the execution involved continually nurturing those relationships with area coaches and families didn’t end, so there was familiarity when the time was right.

In his time thus far in Fort Worth, Dykes has in some ways expanded branding and messaging and in others ways strategically narrowed it.
