TCU recruiting coordinator and offensive analyst Bryan Carrington is heading west. Frogs Today can confirm the On3.com report from earlier this week that Carrington has accepted an offer to become Arizona State’s new cornerbacks coach.
The Sun Devils recently hired Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham to be their new head coach, and he seems interested in bringing in top recruiters to build his staff. Dillingham has also hired former TCU running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples as Arizona State’s wide receivers coach.
In his one year in Fort Worth, Carrington helped revolutionize the way TCU recruits, bringing hype, swagger, and an intelligent approach to Name, Image, and Likeness. He also got into it with Texas Tech fans, riling up the Red Raider fanbase with comments about Tech’s approach to NIL and recruiting in the “desert.”
The result was a batch of cacti being sent to his office, and Red Raiders using the cactus emoji in their responses on social media.
Carrington also assisted in reeling in several big-name commitments to TCU’s 2023 class, including 4-star Red Oak safety Warren Roberson.
Ultimately, Carrington gets a huge pay bump and an on-field coaching role, something that wasn’t coming at TCU.
Prior to his time at TCU, Carrington served as recruiting coordinator at USC. He also spend time as Tom Herman’s director of recruiting at the University of Texas. He is widely considered one of the better recruiting coordinators in the country, and now he’ll be able to have an expanded role both on the field and in recruiting.
If he and Samples are able to recreate some of the magic at Arizona State, it shouldn’t be too long before the Sun Devils are competing at a high level in the Pac-12.
This will be the third significant position TCU head coach Sonny Dykes has to replace in his first year at TCU. Samples left shortly after arriving in Fort Worth to become the running backs coach with the Los Angeles Rams, and defensive line coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe left to join Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia.
Dykes hit home runs with their replacements, hiring Anthony Jones Jr. to coach running backs, and JaMarkus McFarland to coach the defensive line. McFarland was recently named to the AFCA Coaches Leadership Institute 35 Under 35, recognizing young, up-and-coming coaches at the collegiate level.
